Mentawai Tribe
"A Story Woven in Skin"
This documentary is a journey into one of the oldest tattooing traditions in human history—a sacred practice passed down for generations among the Mentawai people of Siberut Island, Indonesia. More than just body art, these tattoos are a living language of identity, spirituality, and connection to nature.
As modernization, religious shifts, and migration reshape the landscape of indigenous cultures, Mentawai tattooing faces the risk of fading into history. Yet, amidst these challenges, there is resilience—elders, shamans, and cultural guardians are working tirelessly to keep the tradition alive.

Through intimate storytelling and immersive cinematography, this documentary follows the individuals dedicated to preserving their ancestral ink. From the Sikerei (shamans) who bless the tattooing rituals to the last remaining tattoo masters who still practice the art, we explore the meaning behind each mark, the fight to safeguard this heritage, and the voices ensuring that Mentawai tattoos remain a symbol of strength for generations to come.
Currently in pre-production, this film seeks to document a culture at a crossroads—where the past, present, and future are etched into the skin.
